Up Close & Personal - Welcome to Life…

There is a well-worn saying ‘ out of the mouth of babes’. Children have a natural talent of saying it ‘as it is.’ God love them, there are no grey areas for them, just black and white. Innocently they blurb out whatever it is they are thinking and as we know children think in a literal way.. In this segment I believe we can have some fun, which will leave a smile on your face as we share experiences we have had when our children, or children whom we know have come out with the funniest and sometimes not so funny comments. Each week I would like to share with you experiences that I had with my own children when they were young and with the treasured experiences I now delight in with my grandchildren. When my youngest grandson Joel was at preschool, he was asked would he like to stand up and tell his playmates whom he would like to be like when he grew up. Joel without hesitation got up and said he wanted to be like his grandad. His teacher asked him would he like to explain to the class in what way he wanted to be like his grandad. Joel once again without hesitation replied “ I want to have a big belly and I want to have a donut on my head” All the children clapped and cheered Joel as he stood there displaying a beaming smile, which lit up his face. His teacher was a little perturbed. Later in the afternoon, when my daughter picked Joel up from school, curiosity got the better of the teacher. The teacher approached my daughter enquiring in an inquisitive way,’ what on earth Joel meant when he said he wanted to have a donut on his head like his grandad?’ My daughter laughed heartily as she realized that Joel was referring to the bald patch on his granddad’s head. Although Joel is now 8-years-old, this treasured memory still brings a smile to our face and I am certain will do so for many decades to come.
