The Communicator - July 2007 Edition

Hello....

Over the past 5 weeks I have engaged in many trainings both in Australia and Overseas and I have found it very interesting to discover just how vastly different the delegates at the trainings deciphered the same experience. Some adopted a positive belief and others adopted a negative belief .

For this reason, I decided that this month I would write about the Power of Beliefs and the impact they have on our life.

We all look at the world through different coloured glasses and we all react differently to the experiences we encounter as we go through life. What many don’t realize is that what they believe to be true will eventually become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Now that’s fine if the belief is positive…..however what if the belief is negative, do you really want that negative belief to become a self-fulfilling prophecy? I would think not… In order to understand how to change a negative belief into a positive one it is necessary to understand….

What Beliefs Are?

@  As you wake up each day and move out into the day you do so by gathering up a host of beliefs to take with you. You then put them on as spectacles through which to view the word.

@  You have beliefs about yourself (your skills, your values, your dignity).

@  You have beliefs about other people (what makes them tick, what they want, how to relate to them, etc.)

@  You have beliefs about work, play, recreation, hobbies and volunteer activities

@  You have beliefs about the world (politics, education, crime, police, the justice system, other countries, wars, journalism and environment). You have beliefs about a thousand different concepts ( time history, the past, the future, causation, personality, emotions and destiny)

Further, because you ‘have these beliefs, you operate from them as one uses a map to navigate territory. Beliefs as mental maps govern our life, emotions, health, skills and everyday experience.

Pervasive ‘things’ these belief maps….

@  But where did they come from?
@  How did we develop, create, or absorb them ‘How much validity do they have?’
@  What comprises these beliefs?
@  How would we change them if we wanted to?
