What does it take to Calm your Nerves?

Whether it’s speaking in public or dealing with difficult situations there are many times where to be at your most effective, you need to keep calm and stay in control. Although you may fear anxiety and even panic by using calming techniques you will be able to get yourself into a more relaxed state.

A technique used by many athletes which is very effective is picturing yourself successfully achieving your desired frame of mind.

By using this technique you can increase the flow of adrenaline and access a highly charged state before you confront any situation. For many top athletes, this part of the build-up to an event is an important and integral part of their training.

Studies have shown that as well as using positive mental images to increase performance, the same method can also be used to reduce stress and anxiety by recalling calming experiences, such as lying in the sun or taking in some idyllic scenery.

Breathing Techniques

Controlling your breathing is a very easy way to calm your nerves. This method is very effective in managing panic attacks. How to Relax

The following methods of calming yourself down have worked for many people. If they don’t work for you at first it is important to keep trying. You have already learned how to be anxious in various situations – so, conversely it is quite possible for you to learn how to calm down.

    • Use positive language Rather than saying “ I want to be less stressed” say instead “ I am now calmer”
    • Get yourself into a relaxed state by using deep breathing techniques. Breathe in slowly through your nose and then out again slowly through your mouth
    • When you are calm, clench and then let go of each group of muscles starting with your toes and working across your entire body.
    • Picture yourself doing something that you enjoy which makes you feel calm and relaxed
    • When you start thinking of that relaxing and calming event, think about it in as much detail as you possibly can.
    • Practice. The more often you use these self-calming techniques, the easier and more effective they will become.
