How to Give Children the Gift of Health! - "Continued"

Health trends that are influenced by nutrition include:

  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular Disease being the number one killer
  • Cancer is on the rise in children
  • Allergies and Asthma now affect millions of children
  • Calcium Deficiency leading to Osteoporosis
  • Attention deficit Disorder (ADD) and Learning
  • Disabilities are on the increase

If your family has not had a healthy diet as part of their daily life, it is not too late to start.

Feeding children is a balancing act. There is something we might call the ‘Battle Zone Diet’ defined as; the more you force, the less they eat. Battle zones create stress and conflict at the dinner table. So the perplexing question is, “How do we teach kids to accept and develop health eating habits?”

I found when I started to change my family’s diet, I made a big mistake, I became too eager and made radical changes. The house was striped of what I termed ‘junk food’ and replaced with what I considered to be ‘healthy food’ This was met with great resistance and I must admit even though I understood the importance of making the change, I found it very hard to stick to and I abandoned the whole idea and went back to what I was used to and what I thought was more palatable and enjoyable food.

It became obvious to me how difficult it would have been for my children to adopt this ‘healthy diet’ plan if I was having difficulty with it.

Fortunately, what I had read and studied about the effects on the body of these so called palatable and enjoyable foods, haunted me at a deeper level and this caused me to revisit our eating habit.

I realised that I had to lead by example; you know the well-worn expression I had to ‘walk the talk’. I then decided it was time to take a different approach to introducing this new eating regime to the family and so I began to make small changes. For instance, instead of eating take-a-way or dining out three days per week, I started by minimizing this to two days a week for 1 month and then l day per week the next month. This was not that hard to do. Instead of cutting out all the foods that were high in fat, I eliminated a few products each week. To sum it up I weaned myself and my family off what we had been so used to eating, into a much healthier eating program.

Whilst it took time to convert, convert we did and quite honestly, when we look back now we find it hard to get our head around just how bad our diet was. The result of this change was that we lost weight easily and the weight has stayed off, we enjoy a higher energy level and have less mood swings. We took to exercising in a fun way, bike riding, going for walks and even doing simple yoga exercises.

I urge each and every one of you to just stop and reflect on what your family diet has been made up of up-to-date and then be honest with yourself and check out what your energy level has been. Ask yourself “ Am I happy with my weight, or could I lose a little weight?”

Creating healthy eating habits is a preventative health issue that needs to be taken seriously. Our children need good role models when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.

It is my utmost belief that if you want your children to change, and then you must change. Children learn by example. Effective parenting is all about ‘ leading and pacing’. It is a game, a game played well by children.
