The Role of Parents as Educators
Tell a Friend
Parents are the children’s first educators and knowledge of what to teach and not to teach are important skills. Certainly school teachers are instrumental in educating children academically.
However parents need to know about the behavioural management of children. They need to understand the nature and purpose of children’ problematic behaviour and how to respond constructively to them, because there is mounting evidence that children who are troubled and exhibit learning difficulties within a classroom, usually have problems with self-esteem issues, which can b most of the time, traced back to their home life.
For parents to prepare their children for the challenges of school they need to focus on a number of areas including:
- The way love is shown to children
- How family conflicts can e resolved
- How parents feel about themselves
- The mirroring of the self worth of each child
- Helping the child who is trouble
In times of trouble and unrest many parents are left with asking themselves ‘where do parents go to get guidance?’ Their family and friends may be supportive, however, they are usually struggling with their own problems. Some of the times the problems are not serious enough to require going to a psychologist, however, nevertheless information is needed to guide the parent through these unsettling times.
Understanding this, here at LifestylePlus Centre we have written and will continue to write topics which we know can help you through some of these times, we offer resources which we have developed to target specific behavioural problems that children go through as they develop and we invite you to sign up for our Monthly Press Release which will contain valuable informative information. By signing up and becoming a member of our family community you will also receive discounts to our products on line.
The role of a parent……this beautiful poem written by Dorothy Law Hole sums it all up.
‘A Life in Your Hands ‘
If a child lives with criticism – he/she learns to condemn
If a child lives with hostility – he/she learns to fight
If a child lives with ridicule – he/she learns to be shy
If a child lives with shame – he/she learns to feel guilty
If a child lives with tolerance – he/she learns to be patient
If a child lives with encouragement – he/she learns confidence
If a child lives with praise – he/she learns to appreciate
If a child lives with fairness – he/she learns justice
If a child lives with security – he/she learns to have faith
If a child lives with approval – he/she learns to like himself/herself
If a child lives with acceptances and friendship – he/she learns to
